Known for its stunning coastline, virgin mangrove forests, lagoons, coral reefs and rich biodiversity, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere has been a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Today, the popularity of this region in Mexico for visitors has been challenging Mexican local authorities to find solutions to the need for development in this area while protecting the biodiversity of the reserve. Already firmly on the global map as an exclusive travel destination, maintaining its niche for luxury and sustainability is key to the responsible development of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere.
Sustainability
In a bid to protect the biosphere by limiting development to sustainable, ecological projects, building permits in Sian Ka’an fall under great scrutiny and have to meet high standards in terms of sustainability and impact on the environment. Both PROFEPA (Federal Environment Protection Office) and SEMARNAT (Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources) are closely involved in the development of the region to protect and conserve the flora and fauna found within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere.
Luxury and Sustainability at Sian Ka’an Village
At the Sian Ka’an Village, we have taken all measures to ensure that the luxury property impacts the local environment as little as possible. Taking part in recycling schemes and composting to reduce waste, using sustainable materials in the building of the luxury property such as wood that can be found locally are all actions that have been taken. 98% of the property has been constructed using sustainable materials from the region.
Likewise, the menu offered at the Sian Ka’an luxury beach rental serves as much local produce as possible, taking care to serve fish that is in season and caught locally each day.
