Diving at Mahahual and Chinchorro
Outdoor Actividades
The warm, vibrant waters of the Mexican Caribbean feature a unique reef system which has been the inspiration for many stories and fabulous legends from colonial times to the present day. To protect the Sian Ka’an Biosphere’s unique diversity and delicate ecosystem, pleasure scuba diving is permitted only in certain areas.
Mahahual
Diving in Mahahual offers a natural underwater paradise just meters from the coastline. The Great Mesoamerican reef, also known as the Great Mayan Reef, is the second longest in the world and home to a plethora of colorful marine life and stunning coral. From Mahahual, you can also enter the Xcalak Reef National Park, with its caves and caverns.
Banco Chinchorro
Banco Chinchorro is a place enveloped in mystery and intrigue, where diving becomes an encounter with history as you explore the many European shipwrecks from the era of the Spanish Conquest. Some 20 or so miles from Mahahual, this natural swimming pool teeming with diversity is a stunning jewel, well worth a dive.
